Burning a solid fuel boiler: wood or coal?

After purchasing and installing a solid fuel boiler, a logical question arises: 'What should we burn in it?'. The market has seen many innovative products such as briquettes, pellets, and biofuels, which are claimed to be inexpensive and highly efficient by sellers. But what is the reality? In fact, the combustion efficiency of such products does not exceed 60%, which is significantly lower than that of conventional fuels. By conventional fuels, we mean coal and wood. Let's explore which fuel is more convenient, practical, and environmentally friendly.

Coal boasts an exceptionally high combustion efficiency, but using it comes with many challenges. It cannot be used in boilers installed outside of a specially designated area. It is also crucial to keep the chimney open at all times because it does not burn completely, and this is necessary to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Lastly, coal is harmful to the environment.

On the other hand, we have wood. It is more common, has lower heat output, but is safer for the environment and human health. Oak logs are the best choice, but they can be expensive. In terms of price-to-quality ratio, birch wood is a winning choice. Stock up on firewood for the winter, and rest assured that the cold seasons will pass unnoticed.
